Cebu City is set to introduce stricter lane rules to ease traffic jams and reduce accidents. The Cebu City Council has proposed a Lane Discipline Ordinance, targeting major roads with clearer lane assignments. Officials hope the changes will cut down on congestion and motorcycle-related collisions.

The new system will divide lanes by function. The leftmost lane will serve as an overtaking or fast lane. Meanwhile, the rightmost lane will become a motorcycle-preferred route.

Before enforcement starts, the city will carry out a 60-day traffic study. This phase will help assess flow and safety needs. Only after installing proper signs and road markings will authorities begin penalising violations. The Cebu City Transportation Office will oversee the rollout. They will work alongside the Philippine National Police and local barangay officials. The coordinated effort aims to ensure smooth implementation and public compliance.

The ordinance focuses on reducing gridlock and improving road safety. Once fully in place, the system will rely on clear signage and consistent enforcement. City leaders expect the changes to make travel faster and safer for all road users.
