Cancún Airport Faces Steady Decline in Passenger Traffic for 2025
Cancún International Airport has seen a steady decline in passenger numbers throughout 2025. In April alone, the airport handled 2.46 million travellers—a 4.3% drop from the previous month. The downward trend reflects broader challenges facing the region’s tourism industry. The airport’s struggles began after its busiest year on record. In 2023, Cancún welcomed 32.8 million passengers, but annual traffic has since fallen. By the end of 2025, total numbers had slipped to 29.3 million travellers.
From January to April 2025, the airport served 10.5 million passengers, a 2.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. International arrivals dipped by 0.7% in those months, while domestic passenger numbers fell more sharply, dropping by 6.8%.
Several factors have contributed to the decline. Rising jet fuel costs have pushed up airfares, making holidays less affordable for many. Inflation in the U.S. has also reduced travel budgets, prompting airlines to cut seat capacity on Cancún routes by 7% to 10%. Competition from other destinations, such as the Dominican Republic, has further drawn tourists away.
Security concerns have added to the challenges. Travel alerts issued by the U.S. government for parts of Mexico have made some visitors hesitant to book trips. The combination of higher costs, reduced flight options, and safety worries has led to fewer arrivals. With passenger numbers continuing to fall, Cancún’s tourism sector faces an uncertain outlook for the rest of the year. Airlines and local businesses will need to adapt to the changing demand.
