California's new tire rule could slash emissions and fuel costs by 2031
California is set to become the first state to require replacement tires to meet energy efficiency standards. The proposed rule would make them as efficient as the average new car tire by 2031. It aims to cut fuel use and reduce emissions across the state. The California Energy Commission introduced the measure to lower gasoline demand. By 2035, it expects to save the equivalent of one to two months of output from a single refinery each year.
The rule could reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions as much as removing 400,000 cars from the road. Drivers would also save an estimated £153 over the life of their tires, even with the higher cost of efficient models.
Public feedback led to changes in the proposal. New grip standards were added, and efficiency targets were relaxed for long-lasting tires. Safety and durability concerns were raised about low rolling resistance tires during consultations.
Tire manufacturers and dealers remain divided on the plan. Some back the move, while others oppose it. The commission may revise the proposal further and allow another round of public comment before a final vote. If approved, the rule would mark a first for the US. It would push California toward lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The state continues to pursue climate policies despite federal opposition to similar standards.
