BYD's 1.5MW flash chargers cut EV charging to minutes globally
BYD is rolling out a new generation of ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers. The company's latest 'flash charging' system can deliver up to 1.5MW of power, slashing charging times to just minutes. These high-capacity stations are set to expand across China, Europe and Australia in the coming years.
The second-generation megawatt chargers, now in final development, support peaks of 1500kW. They operate at over 1000 volts DC and can handle an input of around 2100kW. A key feature is the T-shaped charging gun, which uses liquid-cooled cables to manage extreme heat and current loads.
These stations enable 10C charging, meaning compatible vehicles can add over 400km of range in under five minutes. BYD's intelligent power distribution also allows up to 20 cars to charge at once from a single 1.5MW unit. The company is additionally upgrading older chargers to hit 500kW peaks, ensuring support for 400-volt models.
Expansion plans are ambitious. By mid-2025, BYD aims to install over 4,000 megawatt chargers in China, with partners adding another 15,000. Europe will see 300 stations by mid-2026, while Australia's dealer network is preparing for 1MW-plus chargers. Germany, Hungary, and Southeast Asian markets like Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand are also targeted.
Denza, BYD's luxury brand, will fit 1MW chargers at its dealerships ahead of the Z9 GT's launch. Meanwhile, an entry-level 200kW–600kW station is in development to broaden accessibility.
BYD expects to complete more than 15,000 megawatt flash chargers in China alone by the end of this year. The rapid rollout will cut charging times dramatically for compatible vehicles. Dealerships and public networks in key markets are already preparing for the upgrade.
