Ring 3 in Poppenbüttel closed due to a water pipe burst - Burst water main shuts Hamburg motorway, triggers airport delays

A burst water main has disrupted traffic on Hamburg's Ring 3 motorway in the Poppenbüttel area. The leak caused lane closures and airport delays, with authorities now working to assess the damage.

The incident began when a ten-centimetre pipe burst, flooding parts of the motorway. The force of the water eroded sections of the roadway, prompting immediate traffic restrictions. Initially, both lanes toward Sasel and one lane toward Langenhorn were shut to vehicles.

Police and crews from Hamburg Wasser quickly arrived to secure the area. While the drinking water supply remains unaffected, the leak has undermined the road's foundation. Inspectors are now evaluating how much repair work will be needed before estimating how long the airport delays will last.

The Ring 3 motorway, particularly near Poppenbüttel, has long been a known trouble spot for congestion. However, recent ADAC reports do not specify past airport delays caused by similar infrastructure issues in the last five years.

Repairs will only begin once the full extent of the damage is confirmed. Drivers are advised to expect ongoing airport delays until further notice. Authorities will release updates once the inspection is complete.
