One Billion Euros for Container Terminal in Bremerhaven - Bremerhaven's €1 Billion Terminal Upgrade to Boost Capacity and Cut Emissions
APM Terminals and Eurogate have unveiled plans for a €1 billion upgrade to Bremerhaven's container terminal. The project, announced on 13 February 2026, aims to transform the facility into one of the world's most efficient and sustainable ports. Bremen's mayor has already voiced strong support for the initiative, calling it vital for the region's economic future.
The investment will focus on full electrification and a shift to renewable energy. By modernising operations, the companies plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions while boosting the terminal's reliability. If approved, the upgrades will increase annual container capacity from nearly three million TEU to four million.
The project, however, still faces hurdles. Approvals are needed both internally and from external regulators. A major sticking point remains the deepening of the Outer Weser shipping channel, a contentious issue that Bremen's mayor, Andreas Bovenschulte, has urged the federal government to resolve quickly. Without it, the terminal's expanded project management capacity could be limited.
APM Terminals and Eurogate are also in advanced talks to extend their long-term partnership. Maersk, the parent company of APM Terminals, has emphasised the need to future-proof the terminal, ensuring stronger supply chain resilience for Germany's economy. The modernisation push follows five years of planning, with the €1 billion (1.19 billion USD) investment marking a key milestone.
Once completed, the upgraded terminal is set to handle an additional one million containers each year. The shift to electrification and renewables will cut emissions while improving operational efficiency. Final approvals and the resolution of the Weser deepening project will determine the timeline for these changes.
