Bridge Closure in Bonn: Greens Criticize Wrong Priorities

Bonn's Rhine bridge shuts down, sparking traffic chaos and political feuds

A key motorway bridge in Bonn has been shut down after engineers discovered serious structural flaws. The Nordbrücke on the A565, which crosses the Rhine, was closed when damage was found in its approach viaduct. The sudden shutdown has led to major traffic chaos in the surrounding Bonn and Rhein-Sieg areas. The closure came after inspections revealed critical weaknesses in the bridge’s left-bank viaduct. Authorities are now examining whether temporary supports could be installed to allow restricted use until a full replacement is constructed. Meanwhile, the disruption has forced drivers to find alternative routes, causing long delays across the region.

During a visit to the site, Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder promised a rapid response to the crisis. However, his approach drew sharp criticism from Tarek Al-Wazir, a Green Party transport expert. Al-Wazir accused the ministry of prioritising new motorway projects over essential repairs, calling the focus on expansion misguided. Al-Wazir also condemned a ministry proposal to widen the Nordbrücke if rebuilt, arguing that existing infrastructure must take precedence. He pointed to the federal infrastructure fund, which currently allocates just €2.5 billion annually for maintenance—a fraction of what he claims is needed. The dispute highlights growing tensions over how Germany’s ageing transport network should be managed.

The bridge’s future remains uncertain as engineers assess whether stabilisation is possible. If repairs are deemed unfeasible, a full replacement could take years, leaving the region with prolonged traffic problems. The debate over funding and priorities is likely to continue as officials weigh short-term fixes against long-term solutions.
