Bitcoin's mining costs soar to $80K as hashrate plummets amid geopolitical turmoil
Bitcoin's price and mining landscape are facing fresh challenges as production costs surge and market pressures grow. The average cost to mine a single Bitcoin has climbed close to $80,000, while the network's computing power has dropped sharply from recent highs. Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has reiterated calls for America to lead in cryptocurrency adoption, adding a political dimension to the sector's current turbulence. The Bitcoin network's hashrate has fallen from a peak of around 1,160 exahashes per second (EH/s) to roughly 962 EH/s, with recent lows near 930 EH/s. This decline follows geopolitical tensions, including US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which may have disrupted regional mining operations. Rising energy costs and a shift among miners toward AI and high-performance computing have also contributed to the drop. As a result, the network experienced a 7.76% downward difficulty adjustment—the second-largest since China's 2021 mining ban—reducing the target from 145 trillion to 133.8 trillion.
On the trading side, Bitcoin is testing a key support zone between $65,500 and $66,000. Analysts warn that a break below this level could push prices toward $60,000–$62,000. The market saw $13.45 billion in Bitcoin futures contracts expire on March 27, slashing open interest by 42%. Spot Bitcoin ETFs also recorded net outflows of nearly $296 million in the week ending March 28, ending a four-week streak of inflows. Goldman Sachs analysts note that Bitcoin's recent 45% decline aligns with past bear-market cycles. The bank maintains buy ratings on crypto-linked stocks like Coinbase and Robinhood but highlights persistently low trading volumes as a risk for further short-term volatility. Despite the downturn, companies like GameStop continue holding significant Bitcoin reserves, with 4,710 BTC (worth about $368 million) pledged as collateral for an options strategy via Coinbase Credit. At the FII Summit in Miami, Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance that the US should become the world's top crypto nation. His comments come as miners grapple with squeezed margins and investors watch for signs of market stabilisation.
Bitcoin's mining sector is under strain from higher costs and shifting priorities, while traders face heightened volatility. The combination of geopolitical risks, regulatory uncertainty, and technical adjustments has created a challenging environment. With key support levels in focus and institutional players adjusting their positions, the coming weeks will be critical for determining the cryptocurrency's next direction.
