Berlin-Hamburg rail line reopens after 10-month renovation delays

The Berlin-Hamburg rail line has reopened after a lengthy closure. The line was shut for around ten and a half months while major renovation work took place. Passengers and freight services can now resume normal operations on the route. Work on the Berlin-Hamburg line began in August 2025. Freezing temperatures caused a delay of roughly a month and a half. During the closure, long-distance and freight trains used alternative routes, while regional services ran on partial schedules.

Over 200 buses were brought in to help manage the disruption. Transport experts from the SPD and CDU have since called for improvements. SPD’s Anja Troff-Schaffarzyk stressed the need for better resilience and crisis planning in future projects. Björn Simon of the CDU demanded reliable timelines and clearer communication for upcoming renovations. The line is now fully operational again. Deutsche Bahn faces pressure to increase transparency about the challenges in such projects. Experts insist on better preparation to avoid similar issues in the future.
