Beloved 56 Brewing patio faces demolition after Xcel Energy dispute
A beloved outdoor space at 56 Brewing is set to be torn down next month. The brewery’s patio, built eight years ago, sits on land owned by Xcel Energy. The energy company has ordered its removal, calling the structure illegal and unsafe. The dispute began in October 2022, when Xcel Energy first demanded the patio’s demolition. According to the company, unauthorised buildings near critical energy infrastructure pose risks to safety and operations. Beyond the patio itself, Xcel has also asked for the removal of a permanent wooden staircase and parking signs on their property.
56 Brewing has tried to find alternatives, including leasing or renting the land to keep the space. But negotiations have not succeeded. The brewery now faces the loss of 70 seats once demolition begins on June 11th. Over the years, the patio has hosted countless gatherings, from weddings to celebrations of life. Its closure has sparked discussions among locals, with many sharing their disappointment online.
The demolition will reduce seating at 56 Brewing and end a long-standing community space. Xcel Energy maintains that removing the structure is necessary for safety. The brewery has not announced plans for a replacement.
