Belarus unveils its own McDonald's replacement with a bold challenge to the U.S.

Belarus has opened its own fast-food chain to replace McDonald's after the American company left the country. President Alexander Lukashenko invited U.S. officials to visit the new restaurant, calling it a local alternative. The establishment uses Belarusian ingredients and equipment to match the quality of the original brand.

McDonald's exited Belarus in 2022, prompting authorities to promise a homegrown replacement. Lukashenko claimed the new chain would be 'no worse' than the American version. The first location has now launched, featuring familiar menu items but with local sourcing.

Past visits by U.S. officials to Minsk have coincided with the release of political prisoners. In 2020, 52 detainees were freed following an appeal by then-President Donald Trump. More recently, 123 prisoners were released on December 13, 2025. However, no specific numbers link recent U.S. visits to new releases during negotiations.

Lukashenko's invitation to U.S. officials included a playful remark: 'Let's go to McDonald's.' The move signals an attempt to normalise relations while showcasing Belarusian self-sufficiency in the fast-food sector.

The new chain marks Belarus's effort to fill the gap left by McDonald's departure. While the restaurant operates independently, its launch follows a pattern of prisoner releases during diplomatic engagements. The government has not confirmed whether further releases will occur in connection with the latest U.S. visits.
