Bangladesh Acquires HMS Enterprise to Strengthen Maritime Research and Security
Bangladesh has signed a deal to acquire the hydrographic survey ship HMS Enterprise from the UK. The agreement was finalised at the Bangladesh Navy headquarters in Dhaka on Sunday. Once transferred in 2027, the vessel will significantly boost the country's maritime research and security capabilities.
The government-to-government contract was signed by Rear Admiral Md Shafiqur Rahman for Bangladesh and Ms Nanise Qalobulawasaikabara for the UK. The HMS Enterprise, decommissioned by the Royal Navy in 2023, will undergo regeneration before joining the Bangladesh Navy fleet.
The ship is equipped for deep-sea surveys, seabed mapping, and oceanographic data collection. It also features a helicopter landing deck and advanced communication systems. These capabilities will support navigational chart preparation and help enforce maritime security against illegal activities like smuggling and piracy.
After its regeneration, expected by 2026, the vessel will play a key role in developing the blue economy. It will also assist in implementing new survey standards once operational in 2027.
The acquisition of HMS Enterprise will expand the Bangladesh Navy's hydrographic and research abilities. The ship's advanced features are set to enhance both scientific work and maritime law enforcement. Its arrival in 2027 marks a major step in strengthening the country's naval operations.
