Baltic states unite to buy 20 new trains for Rail Baltica expansion

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are jointly purchasing up to 20 new regional trains for the Rail Baltica route. The deal marks a major step in improving cross-border rail connections. Each country will receive a share of the fleet, with deliveries expected by the end of the decade. The tender for the joint procurement has been extended, giving bidders until mid-June to submit proposals. Lithuania plans to order up to eight trains, while Estonia expects between five and seven, and Latvia up to five. The exact number for Latvia will depend on future passenger demand and ongoing infrastructure work.

The first trains are set to arrive in Estonia in late 2029, with operations beginning by the end of 2030. Estonia’s regional line will run from Tallinn to Häädemeeste, stopping at more than a dozen stations along the way. There is also potential for the route to extend south into Latvia, reaching Riga.

Each train will offer around 200 seats, catering zones, and facilities for different travellers, including families and passengers with pets. The new services will operate primarily within each country, stopping at local stations along the Rail Baltica line. The new fleet aims to boost regional connectivity across the Baltics. Operations will start in Estonia by 2030, with Latvia and Lithuania following based on their infrastructure timelines. The trains will provide modern, flexible travel options for both domestic and cross-border passengers.
