Baar scraps town-wide heating network for targeted local solutions
Plans for a town-wide district heating network in Baar have been abandoned. The municipality and energy provider WWZ concluded that such a system would not be technically or financially feasible. Instead, officials are now focusing on smaller, targeted solutions in specific areas.
The original proposal aimed to create a comprehensive district heating network across Baar. However, studies found that the municipality lacks the necessary energy density to make it cost-effective. High investment costs and limited local renewable energy sources further reduced its viability.
Many larger properties in Baar already use their own heating systems, such as groundwater or heat pumps. This reduced the potential demand for a centralised network. As a result, the municipality shifted its approach to more pragmatic, long-term solutions.
Officials are now examining two areas—Unterfeld and Baarermatt—for possible smaller networks. These would rely on deep groundwater and could prove economically sustainable. The municipality plans to conduct detailed assessments and launch pilot projects in coordination with the canton and specialist agencies.
The revised strategy focuses on well-defined, localised networks rather than a town-wide system. By targeting specific zones, Baar aims to develop sustainable heating solutions over time. Further studies and pilot schemes will determine the next steps.
