B244 roadworks near completion with €5.6M upgrades for drivers and cyclists

The long-awaited roadworks on the B244 between Wittingen and Zasenbeck are almost finished. The €5.6 million project, fully funded by the federal government, has overhauled key sections of the carriageway and added new cycling paths. Drivers and cyclists can expect smoother journeys when the route fully reopens in early June. Construction began with full road closures to ensure worker safety. The B244’s surface was completely replaced in several stretches, including the section running through Suderwittingen. Crews also repaired bridges and upgraded auxiliary facilities along the route.

The project included major improvements for cyclists. New or extended paths now connect Wittingen, Suderwittingen, Ohrdorf, and Zasenbeck. These additions form part of a wider effort to boost the region’s cycling network. While the work progressed, drivers faced detours and delays. The closures caused disruption, but officials say the upgrades will enhance traffic safety and comfort once complete.

The refurbished B244 and its new cycling paths are set to open in the first week of June. The €5.6 million investment covers road resurfacing, bridge repairs, and expanded cycling routes. The changes aim to provide safer, more efficient travel for both motorists and cyclists in the area.
