Austria's fuel prices dip slightly—but diesel still tops €2 per litre

Fuel prices in Austria have seen a slight drop over the weekend, offering some relief to drivers. Despite the small decrease, diesel remains above €2 per litre at most stations. The recent fluctuations come after weeks of sharp increases linked to global tensions.

Before the latest crisis, diesel averaged €1.57 per litre, while gasoline cost around €1.52. Now, the median price for diesel stands at €2.086 per litre, with gasoline at €1.823. The surge has added 30 to 50 cents to fuel costs since the Iran conflict escalated.

Over the past four weeks, trends in Austria and Germany have differed. In Germany, diesel rose by about 8 cents to €1.72 per litre, and gasoline increased by 7 cents to €1.85. Austria, however, saw diesel drop by 5 cents to €1.68, with gasoline falling by 4 cents to €1.79. The last time prices spiked this sharply was in early 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Austrian gas stations can adjust prices under specific rules. They may only raise them at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Price cuts, however, can happen at any time.

Diesel remains above two euros at nearly all Austrian filling stations. The recent weekend dip provides minor relief, but costs stay significantly higher than before the Iran conflict. Drivers continue to face elevated prices compared to pre-crisis levels.
