No Room in the Exhibition Hall - Election Helpers Move to the Beer Tent - Augsburg's mayoral runoff ballots counted in a beer tent
Augsburg's mayoral runoff took an unusual turn when election workers counted absentee ballots in a beer tent. The city chose the Plärrer fairgrounds venue after struggling to find a suitable alternative. The decision came as the usual exhibition hall was already booked for another event.
The first round of voting had taken place in a large exhibition hall. But for the runoff, that space was no longer available. With few other options, officials turned to the beer tent already set up for the Easter folk festival.
The tent hosted workers as they tallied postal votes for the contest between incumbent Lord Mayor Eva Weber of the CSU and SPD challenger Florian Freund. City authorities confirmed the move was purely practical, given the lack of other large halls in Augsburg at the time.
The beer tent provided a temporary solution for the vote count. Officials ensured the process ran smoothly despite the unconventional setting. The runoff results will determine whether Weber retains her position or Freund takes office as the city's new mayor.
