Aterian's Eastinco launches tantalum joint venture as prices soar to record highs
Aterian plc's subsidiary Eastinco has begun trading and exporting under a new joint venture with Wogen Resources Limited. The partnership aims to strengthen Eastinco's position in the tantalum market, where prices have recently hit record levels. Both companies expect the collaboration to boost revenue and improve supply chain reliability.
The joint venture (JV) was formed to capitalise on rising demand for conflict-free tantalum, a critical material in electronics and automotive industries. Over the past year, European semiconductor and electric vehicle manufacturers—such as Tesla and Infineon—as well as Asian consumer electronics firms like Apple and Samsung have increased orders for certified African tantalum. The surge in demand, combined with tighter supply, has pushed tantalum ore prices to historic highs of around US$225 per pound.
Eastinco has already completed its first export operation with Wogen and is now gathering additional supply for further shipments. The JV provides stronger risk management, governance, and adherence to international traceability standards, ensuring responsible sourcing. This framework also improves Eastinco's working capital model, reducing reliance on equity funding while enhancing procurement capabilities.
Founded in 1972, Wogen is recognised for its integrity and expertise in delivering high-value raw materials to the non-ferrous sector. The partnership strengthens Aterian's market credibility, granting better access to global markets and liquidity. Eastinco benefits further from increased trading activity and higher margins, driven by volatility in the commodity sector.
Aterian aims for the JV to generate enough trading revenue to cover its full operational costs by 2026. The collaboration also expands Eastinco's procurement network under strict traceability rules, reinforcing its role as a trusted supplier of verified, conflict-free materials. With stronger financial flexibility and market reach, the company is positioned to meet growing demand from major international buyers.
