Astana races to upgrade utilities before winter's harsh arrival

Astana is expanding and upgrading its utility infrastructure to meet growing demand. Major work has begun on heating, electrical, and water systems across the city to ensure reliability before the autumn-winter season. Repair and modernisation efforts started in April 2023. Astana Energy JSC is carrying out capital repairs on boilers, turbines, transformers, and auxiliary equipment. At the same time, Astana Heat Transit JSC will overhaul 7.5 kilometres of heating networks and complete work on outgoing networks from the Turan gas thermal station.

The city has already built and commissioned the Yugo-Vostok and Turan (first phase) gas thermal stations. In 2025, it added the Arai substation, four distribution points, and two transformer substations to the grid. Construction is now underway for two new water-heating boilers at CHP-2 and a third gas thermal station in Telman District.

Electrical upgrades include repairing 67.4 kilometres of power lines and building the 110/20 kV Kabanbai Batyr substation. The new Telman gas thermal station will supply centralised heating to the Bagystan neighbourhood and parts of the left bank, with a capacity of 620 Gcal/hour. The improvements aim to support Astana’s growth and prepare for the seven-month heating season. The upgrades will enhance the reliability of heating, water, and electrical systems across the city.
