Astana races to stop deadly child window falls with new safety measures
Astana is taking urgent action to prevent children from falling out of windows. The city has already recorded five such incidents this year, with two ending in tragedy. Authorities are now fitting safety devices and stepping up awareness campaigns to stop further accidents. Since January, five children have fallen from windows in Astana, and two did not survive. In 2025 alone, the city saw 58 similar cases, with 14 fatalities. Officials warn that these tragedies often happen in seconds when adults are distracted or mistakenly believe mosquito nets provide protection.
The city’s Department of Emergency Situations has launched a major prevention drive. Over 400 people—including emergency workers, police, volunteers, and local agencies—are carrying out mass inspections. More than 1,000 windows will be fitted with locks and restrictors this season to stop children from opening them unsupervised.
Schools are also playing a role in raising awareness. Parent meetings have been held in 50 educational institutions, and around 1,500 residents have received safety briefings. Experts continue to stress that windows should never be left open in rooms where children are alone, and that proper locks or bars must always be used. The risk of falls rises as warmer weather arrives, prompting more open windows. With safety devices being installed and public education expanding, authorities aim to reduce accidents. Parents are being reminded to stay vigilant and use only approved childproofing measures.
