Astafyev Port's giant canopy nears completion to slash coal dust emissions
Astafyev Port is nearing the finish of a major project to enclose its coal unloading area. A vast canopy, designed to cut dust emissions, is now in its final construction phase. The structure will play a key role in the terminal’s shift to fully enclosed coal handling. The canopy covers over 10,000 square meters, towering 33 meters high and stretching 206 meters long. Its frame consists of tens of thousands of steel-aluminium parts, built to endure the harsh climate of Primorsky Krai. Supporting the structure are 12 reinforced concrete foundations, each 12 meters tall, along with 16 additional supports.
Construction has involved international firms, including Spain’s Gaptec and Far Eastern companies T-Stroy and Alpar Plus. The site also features a protective curtain around the unloading zone to block coal dust from escaping.
The terminal already uses 12 advanced dust suppression systems. These include smart water cannons and a vacuum machine, all operating year-round. The systems adjust automatically to changing weather, ensuring continuous dust control. The project is set to wrap up in the third quarter of 2026. Once complete, the terminal will fully transition to enclosed coal transshipment. This will further reduce dust emissions and improve operational efficiency at the port.
