AP-7 motorway near Marbella faces six weeks of disruptive roadworks

Major roadworks on the AP-7 motorway near Marbella will begin shortly, lasting for six weeks. The project aims to reduce noise pollution but will cause delays and lane restrictions along a busy stretch of the coastal route. Drivers are being advised to plan ahead and check for live updates before travelling. The scheme is part of Spain’s national Noise Action Plan, funded by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) with 13.1 million euros. It involves installing over 6.6 kilometres of sound-proofing screens, covering around 26,300 square metres. The barriers will vary in height from 2.5 to 4.5 metres, targeting areas where noise levels have been a persistent issue.

Lane closures are expected in the Malaga direction, primarily overnight between 10pm and 6am, to allow for the installation of these barriers. The work will affect multiple junctions, including 1042, where the AP-7 meets the A-7 towards Fuengirola and Malaga. Junction 1043, linking to the A-355, Ojen, and La Cañada shopping park, will also see disruptions, along with narrowing at junction 1044, impacting the Marbella and Avenida del Trapiche exits.

Restrictions will extend beyond the main carriageway, with entry and exit ramps at junctions 1042, 1043, and 1044 all affected. The roadworks add to existing congestion issues, as many drivers already avoid the tolled AP-7, opting instead for the parallel A-7 autovía between Fuengirola and San Pedro de Alcantara. While recent pothole repairs have improved parts of the A-7, calls for broader upgrades on state-managed routes remain unaddressed. The six-week project will bring long-term noise reduction but short-term disruption for motorists. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, particularly during overnight hours, and to stay alert near key junctions. Real-time traffic updates will be essential for navigating the affected coastal corridor safely.
