Amtrak worker dies after being struck by a train in Pennsylvania
A fatal accident involving an Amtrak employee has halted train services along a major Pennsylvania route. Jeremy Charles, 39, died on Monday morning after being struck by a train in East Lampeter Township. The incident has led to a full suspension of Keystone route operations between Harrisburg and Philadelphia for the rest of the day.
The tragedy unfolded around 11:30 a.m., when emergency services were called to the scene near Greenfield Road. Charles, who was working on the tracks at the time, was declared dead immediately. His body was later taken to the Lancaster County Forensic Center for examination.
An autopsy will be carried out to establish the exact cause and manner of death. The disruption has affected all 28 daily trains that normally run along the Harrisburg Line, with 14 services in each direction operated by SEPTA. Commuters and travellers have been advised to seek alternative transport while the line remains closed.
The suspension of services will remain in place for the rest of Monday, impacting thousands of passengers. Investigations into the incident are expected to continue, with further details likely to emerge after the autopsy. Amtrak has not yet announced when normal operations will resume.
