American Airlines soars with record $54.6B revenue despite government shutdown setbacks

American Express has reported strong financial results for 2025, with record revenue despite challenges from a government shutdown. The company also announced major upgrades to its fleet, lounges, and premium services under CEO Robert Isom.

The airline achieved its highest-ever quarterly revenue of $14 billion in Q4 2025, bringing the full-year total to $54.6 billion. However, the U.S. government shutdown earlier in the year cut revenue by $325 million.

In June 2025, American Express introduced the Flagship Suite, a new luxury cabin for long-haul flights. The upgrade aims to attract high-end travellers with enhanced comfort and service. At the same time, the company is modernising its Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200ERs, Airbus A319s, and A320s to expand premium seating options. Beyond the aircraft, American Express is investing in its lounges, including upgrades to Flagship and Admirals Club locations. These improvements come alongside expansion at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, where the airline is funding the new Terminal F. Membership in the AAdvantage loyalty programme grew by 7% in 2025, reflecting stronger customer engagement. Financially, the airline reported a net income of $99 million for Q4 and $111 million for the full year. Excluding special items, net income reached $106 million in Q4 and $237 million for 2025.

American Express closed 2025 with record revenue and ongoing investments in its fleet and customer experience. The company's focus on premium services and infrastructure suggests a push to strengthen its position in the competitive airline market.
