Almaty's new Avtobys system transforms public transport with digital fares
Almaty has launched a new digital fare system for its public transport. Called Avtobys, the pilot programme began officially on 15 October 2024. Fifteen bus and tram routes now use the technology as the first step in a wider rollout.
The Avtobys system offers passengers multiple ways to pay. Options include bank cards, transit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Smartphone users can also scan QR codes, tap via NFC, connect through Bluetooth, or use the dedicated Avtobys app.
For those eligible for discounts, the process has been simplified. Applications for concessionary fares can now be completed online. This removes the need for in-person visits or paper documentation.
City officials highlight the system's benefits for transparency and oversight. Digital tracking improves trip accounting and makes monitoring public transport usage easier. The gradual introduction will eventually cover all routes across Almaty.
The pilot phase of Avtobys is now active on selected lines. Passengers can choose from various contactless payment methods, while discount applicants benefit from a streamlined online process. The city plans to expand the system to the entire transport network in the coming months.
