Alberta MLAs weigh e-scooter reimbursements despite lingering safety risks

A bipartisan committee of MLAs is examining whether e-scooters and e-bikes should be added to the list of reimbursable work travel expenses. Currently, elected officials and caucus staff can claim back costs for taxi rides, car rentals, and some airfare. The proposal follows a report by The Canadian Press published on June 10, 2026, which highlighted safety and insurance concerns. The committee passed a motion to explore corporate agreements with providers like Lime and Bird Canada. This motion also directs legislative assembly staff to investigate if these companies would adjust their liability rules for a potential partnership. At present, e-scooter and e-bike providers typically require riders to assume all risks, leaving users uninsured in case of injury.

United Conservative backbencher Nolan Dyck supports further exploration of reimbursement for e-scooters and e-bikes. He cites their speed and low cost as key advantages for work travel. Bird Canada, which already has corporate agreements with various businesses, has indicated openness to discussing a ride program for Alberta’s legislative assembly. The committee’s report initially advised against reimbursing e-scooter and e-bike trips due to unresolved safety and insurance issues. However, the motion to explore corporate agreements signals a step toward addressing these concerns. The outcome will determine whether these transport options become eligible for reimbursement.
