A new partnership will bring AI-powered humanoid welding robots to shipyards. HD Hyundai, its subsidiaries, and U.S. firm Persona AI are working together on the project. The goal is to automate complex welding tasks in shipbuilding with advanced robotic systems.

The collaboration builds on a 2022 memorandum of understanding between the companies. Since then, a prototype has proven that humanoid welding robots can work effectively in shipyard conditions.

Persona AI will design a bipedal humanoid platform capable of operating safely in shipyard environments. HD Hyundai Robotics will handle system integration, ensuring the robots function smoothly in real-world settings. Meanwhile, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) will develop training technologies for the robots, using actual shipyard data to refine their welding skills. The partnership aims to commercialise these robots for shipbuilding sites. HD Hyundai plans to deploy them for tasks that require precision and adaptability in challenging conditions.

The project marks a step toward automating welding work in shipyards. If successful, the humanoid robots could handle complex tasks currently performed by human workers. Deployment will depend on further testing and system refinement.
