DB Electric Trains Roll Through Ahr Valley Three Months Early - Ahr Valley railway relaunches with fully electric trains after 2021 flood rebuild

The Ahr Valley railway has reopened with fully electric services, marking a major recovery since the 2021 floods. Two key lines, the RB 30 and RB 32, now run on electric power, offering faster and greener travel for passengers. The upgrade was completed ahead of schedule, with operations starting this weekend.

The Ahr line suffered severe damage during the 2021 floods, forcing a complete rebuild. Engineers installed modern signalling systems and overhead electric lines to replace the old infrastructure. The project finished three months early, allowing electric services to launch by March 16, 2026.

The RB 30 line now connects Bonn directly to the Ahr Valley without requiring transfers. Previously, passengers had to change trains, but the new service runs straight through to Ahrbrück via Remagen. Meanwhile, the RB 32 route, operated by Trans Regio Deutsche Regionalbahn GmbH, has been fully electric since December.

Local officials have welcomed the improvements, highlighting better comfort and reduced emissions. The switch to electric trains also aligns with broader efforts to modernise regional transport. Starting this Sunday, more electric services will run on the route, increasing capacity for commuters and tourists.

The electrification of both RB 30 and RB 32 lines brings faster, climate-friendly travel to the Ahr Valley. Passengers now benefit from direct connections to Bonn and upgraded facilities. While long-term effects on passenger numbers and the local economy remain unclear, the early completion of the project provides a boost for the region's transport network.
