Closure of the A7 near Bad Brückenau for construction work - A7 motorway shuts down again for critical bridge replacement this weekend

A major section of the A7 motorway in Lower Franconia will close again this weekend. The shutdown begins on Saturday at 8:00 PM and lasts until noon on Sunday. Drivers should prepare for delays as bridgework continues on the busy route.

The closure affects the stretch between the Bad Brückenau/Volkers and Bad Brückenau/Wildflecken junctions, heading towards Würzburg. Around 42,000 vehicles use this part of the A7 daily, making it a critical transport link. A signed diversion (U54) will guide traffic near the Bavarian-Hessian border during the work.

The Römershag viaduct, built over 55 years ago, is being fully replaced due to severe structural defects and inadequate load capacity for modern traffic. Repairs began in 2022, with the entire project estimated to cost €95 million. The ageing bridge is one of many along the A7 requiring urgent attention. The A7, spanning 960 kilometres from Flensburg to Füssen, has faced years of near-constant construction. Bridges along the route, particularly in Franconia, have needed extensive repairs due to wear and increased traffic demands.

This weekend's closure is the latest in a long series of disruptions for A7 motorists. The new viaduct aims to improve safety and capacity on a heavily used stretch of road. Further work is expected as other bridges undergo similar upgrades.
