A1 motorway faces major nighttime roadworks starting February 2026
Major roadworks on the A1 motorway between Luterbach and Härkingen will restart in mid-February 2026. The project, costing around 1.06 billion Swiss francs, is fully funded by the National Road and Agglomeration Traffic Fund (NAF). Drivers should prepare for overnight disruptions as work progresses in stages over several weeks.
The first phase of the works will take place between Aarebrücke and Wangen an der Aare from February 15 to 20. Crews will reposition concrete barriers and carry out resurfacing tasks. Nighttime operations will reduce traffic to a single lane, with motorists facing potential delays, noise, and light disturbances.
From February 22 to 27, the focus shifts to the section between the Deitingen service areas and Aarebrücke. Resurfacing near the Deitingen service areas is scheduled specifically for February 15 and 16, running from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night.
The final phase, between Luterbach and the Deitingen service areas, will occur from March 1 to 6. The entire expansion project, aimed at widening this stretch to six lanes, is financed by the NAF. This fund relies on user contributions, including a mineral oil tax surcharge, vehicle taxes, and motorway vignette fees.
The original budget for the six-lane expansion was not publicly disclosed, but the current cost stands at 1.06 billion Swiss francs.
The roadworks will bring temporary inconvenience for drivers, particularly during overnight hours. Once completed, the expanded six-lane section is expected to improve traffic flow between Luterbach and Härkingen. The NAF's funding ensures no additional financial burden on taxpayers beyond existing road-use charges.
