Heavy traffic on the A2 motorway caused major delays for drivers over the weekend. The congestion stretched for 15 kilometres near the Gotthard Road Tunnel, adding over two hours to journey times between Biasca and Airolo in Ticino. The Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) highlighted the situation in a social media update.

The delays began on Saturday as traffic from Ticino and Italy built up at the tunnel's southern entrance. Long queues formed, forcing drivers to crawl forward for hours. Many faced an extra two and a half hours on their trips through the affected stretch.

The TCS shared details of the gridlock on X, confirming the scale of the disruption. No immediate cause for the unusual congestion was provided, but the volume of cross-border traffic appeared to play a key role.

The incident left drivers stuck in slow-moving queues for much of the day. With no quick solution in sight, many had to adjust their travel plans. The TCS report serves as a reminder of how vulnerable this key route can be during peak periods.
